President Donald Trump delivered his first formal speech since the midterm elections at the Up Summit held at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Friday (November 6). During his address, Trump emphasized the importance of American-made space and military equipment, stating that the best is built in the USA. He also announced plans to transform the Kennedy Space Center into a major international venue for aviation and space demonstrations, aiming to surpass the Paris Air Show in scale and impact, as reported by FOX 35 Orlando.
Trump's speech came in the wake of a significant Democratic victory in the midterm elections, where Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress. Despite this, Trump reminded the audience that he was not on the ballot, suggesting that Republicans would have won if he had been. He congratulated Florida Republican Governor-elect Byron Donalds and Republican Senator Ashley Moody on their election victories, highlighting Florida as a bright spot for the party.
The president outlined ambitious goals for the United States in space exploration, including returning American astronauts to the moon and eventually sending them to Mars. He also announced plans for NASA to launch a nuclear-powered spacecraft to Mars within the next two years. Trump praised the Artemis program and its astronauts, including Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen, who were present at the event.
In addition to space exploration, Trump discussed advancements in aviation, such as ending restrictions on supersonic flight over the continental United States, and strengthening the domestic drone industry. He emphasized the need to maintain the U.S. lead in artificial intelligence and advanced computing, citing competition with China as a major national priority.
Trump's visit to Florida marked his second trip to the state in a week, following a campaign rally for Republican candidates before the midterms. After his speech, the president planned to travel to Mar-a-Lago, where he would remain through the weekend.
