The U.S. military conducted a defensive strike on Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. According to The Hill, the strike targeted radar detectors and missile launchers after Iran fired at a U.S. aircraft. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) has not commented on the incident.

The strike, which occurred a day before the U.S. midterm elections, was described by a U.S. official as a defensive measure against Iranian surface-to-air missiles. CNN reported that the action was not indicative of a return to major combat operations.

Qeshm Island, the largest in the Persian Gulf, hosts a naval base and an underground missile site. The island is strategically important for Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies. PBS NewsHour noted that Iranian state television reported explosions on the island, which were also heard in nearby areas.

President Donald Trump has suggested that diplomacy with Tehran is ongoing, stating on social media that an agreement "could happen." Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism about recent talks with Iran, indicating progress toward a potential deal.

The strike comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, with backing from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey, to bring the U.S. and Iran back to the negotiating table. The situation remains tense, with the potential for further developments in the region.
