Starbucks is sidestepping a report about a potential takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill. The Financial Times reported last week that the coffee giant had recently worked with advisors on a proposed effort to unite the two chains. However, Starbucks has stated that it remains "laser-focused" on its turnaround plan, known as the "Back to Starbucks strategy," according to MarketScreener.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, who previously led Chipotle for six years, would be back in business with the burrito chain if a merger occurs. Both companies are set to release their latest earnings results before the end of the month.

Starbucks shares initially fell as much as 6% following the report, while Chipotle's shares jumped 8%, Investing.com reports. The speculation about a merger has raised questions about the strategic rationale for such a move, especially given Starbucks' ongoing turnaround efforts and the potential costs involved.

Analysts have noted that while a merger could accelerate Chipotle's international expansion by leveraging Starbucks' global presence, the operational synergies might be limited. The two companies have different supply chains and labor processes, as highlighted by Investing.com.

For now, the discussions appear preliminary, and neither company has confirmed a formal proposal. The potential merger remains a topic of speculation, with Starbucks focusing on its recovery and Chipotle addressing its own challenges.
