President Donald Trump addressed the Republican Party's first midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, urging supporters to vote as if his name were on the ballot. The event, dubbed "Trump-a-palooza," spotlighted Trump's influence in the final stretch of the election cycle. During his nearly two-hour speech, Trump acknowledged the challenges facing the party in the midterms and promised $5,000 dividend checks for adults if Republicans retain Congress, without detailing the funding plan.
Trump's speech touched on familiar themes, including border security, tax cuts, and energy production. He also criticized the "radical left" and reiterated his claims about the 2020 election. Trump mentioned the anniversary of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination, blaming the "radical left" for his death. The crowd responded with chants of "Charlie, Charlie."
The convention, held at the American Airlines Center, aimed to promote Republican candidates in key races. Trump highlighted the importance of electing Ken Paxton in Texas, emphasizing the significance of the state's Senate race. The event featured policy presentations on tax cuts, healthcare, and trade, with a focus on the party's agenda.
Despite Trump's approval ratings being at an all-time low, he plans to campaign in 35 competitive races before the midterms. The convention's second night will feature Vice President JD Vance as a keynote speaker.
The event drew attention to Dallas, with the city estimating a $1.8 million cost for security. Several streets near the convention center were closed, and the DART Victory Park station was shut down during the event.
