Officials have provided further details about a shooting that occurred at a Minneapolis apartment complex on Wednesday (September 2). The incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including the suspected shooter, Carlton Neal Johnson. According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), Johnson, 35, was killed during a shootout with police on the ninth floor of the Shoreline Plaza Apartment building.
The incident began outside the building when Johnson shot a woman during a child custody exchange. He then entered the building and fatally shot two men, identified as Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61. Both were residents of the apartment complex. Six people were injured in total, including three police officers who responded to the scene. Officers Joseph Michnowski and Yahye Ahmed were shot, while a third officer, Ernest Boateng, was injured by glass while breaking a window.
The BCA is investigating whether Johnson or the police fired first. Surveillance footage shows Johnson entering the building and shooting at apartment staff before heading to the ninth floor. The police arrived shortly after and engaged in a gunfight with Johnson, resulting in his death.
Authorities are still investigating Johnson's motives and any potential connections he may have had with the victims. The BCA plans to release more details as the investigation continues. Johnson was reportedly facing eviction from the apartment building, which may have contributed to the incident.
