Aaron Donald, one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, is returning to the Los Angeles Rams. The 35-year-old defensive tackle has signed a one-year deal worth $20 million, with incentives that could increase the total to $30 million. Donald initially retired in 2024 after a distinguished ten-year career, during which he made the Pro Bowl every season and recorded 111 sacks, the second most among primary defensive tackles in league history.
The Rams announced Donald's return on Sunday, confirming the comeback that had been speculated since the team acquired Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in June. Donald's decision to rejoin the Rams is seen as a significant boost to the team's Super Bowl aspirations. Rams' head coach, Sean McVay, had spoken positively about the possibility of Donald's return, and Donald had two official tryouts with the team earlier this month.
The addition of Donald to the Rams' roster, alongside Garrett, creates one of the most formidable defensive fronts in recent memory. The duo boasts a combined 236.5 career sacks. The Rams' defensive line, which also includes standouts like Braden Fiske and Byron Young, is expected to be a major force in the upcoming season.
Donald, who was drafted 13th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, has been a cornerstone of the Rams' defense. His return not only strengthens the team's defense but also brings back a leader who has been instrumental in the Rams' success, including their victory in Super Bowl LVI. The Rams, who reached the NFC title game last season, are now considered strong contenders for the Super Bowl, which will be held at their home field, SoFi Stadium, in February 2027.
