Senator Darline Graham has emerged victorious in the South Carolina Republican Senate primary runoff, defeating Congressman Ralph Norman. The race was closely watched, particularly due to Graham's endorsement by President Donald Trump. Graham, who is the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, will now face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November election.
Graham's victory marks a significant win for President Trump, who had backed her candidacy following her brother's sudden death from a heart condition on July 11. The state's governor, Henry McMaster, appointed Graham to temporarily fill the Senate seat, and Trump subsequently endorsed her for a full term.
Despite her lack of political experience, Graham's campaign benefited from substantial financial backing. Trump's super PAC, MAGA Inc., spent over $827,000 in support of her candidacy. Graham's campaign also heavily outspent Norman, investing more than $7 million in television ads during the runoff period.
While Graham's political inexperience was a point of contention, with critics highlighting her limited knowledge on national security, her connection to Trump and her brother's legacy played a pivotal role in securing her victory. Graham expressed her commitment to continuing her brother's work, stating, "I want to continue to fight to finish what he was doing. He helped this state."
The race was one of Trump's significant endorsements in the midterm primary cycle, as he aimed to bolster his influence within the Republican Party. Graham's win is seen as a testament to the enduring impact of Trump's support among Republican voters.
Looking ahead, Graham will face Annie Andrews in the general election in November. South Carolina has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1998, making the upcoming election a crucial test for both parties.
