A tragic incident unfolded on Friday (August 21) at Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden, where an 18-year-old armed with a sword attacked students, resulting in one fatality and at least three injuries. The suspect, a former student of the school, was shot and detained by police after the attack.
According to police chief Tommy Alriksson, officers responded quickly to the scene following reports of ongoing violence. The deceased was discovered as police secured the premises. Among the injured were two teenage boys, aged 12 and 17, who were seriously hurt and taken to the hospital.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as the investigation continues. The local community of Fagersta, a town with about 13,000 residents, is in shock. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with all those affected," on social media.
This incident is part of a series of attacks at Swedish educational institutions. Previously, a mass shooting in Orebro in February 2025 resulted in 10 deaths, and a racially motivated sword attack in Trollhattan in 2015 claimed three lives.
Authorities are examining potential links to a TikTok account that posted a picture of a sword shortly before the attack. The investigation is ongoing, with police reviewing available camera footage and other evidence.
