Federal authorities are investigating a fatal shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Houston on Tuesday (July 7). According to ICE, the incident occurred during a traffic stop at around 6:50 a.m. as part of a targeted enforcement operation. The agency identified the deceased as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national without legal status in the United States.

ICE claims that Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest by weaponizing his vehicle and trying to run over an ICE officer, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense. Salgado Araujo was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The shooting has sparked calls for transparency and an independent investigation. The Texas Civil Rights Project and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) have both expressed concerns over the use of force and are demanding a thorough review of the incident. LULAC President Ramon Palomares stated, "This is not an isolated event across the nation," highlighting a pattern of ICE involvement in shootings.

Local elected officials, including U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia, have also called for a complete and transparent accounting of the shooting, urging the preservation and review of all available evidence. The FBI and the Office of Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security are leading investigations into the shooting and the potential assault on a federal officer.

The incident has drawn attention to ICE's enforcement tactics, with some questioning the agency's account of events. The Guardian reports that similar cases have seen government descriptions contradicted by video evidence. Local residents and civil rights groups continue to demand answers and accountability.
