NBCUniversal is exploring a bid to secure both English and Spanish-language broadcast rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, according to a report by Sports Business Journal. This move could significantly reshape the U.S. sports media landscape, as NBC aims to consolidate soccer media power under one corporate umbrella.

Currently, NBC holds the Spanish-language rights through Telemundo and Peacock, which expire after the 2026 World Cup. The company is now seeking to extend this deal and acquire the English-language rights, potentially bundling them into a single package that analysts project could exceed $1 billion. This would surpass the $485 million Fox paid for the 2026 English-language rights alone.

NBC's interest in the 2030 World Cup rights comes as the company continues to build its soccer infrastructure. Recently, NBCUniversal extended its Spanish-language media rights agreement with U.S. Soccer through 2030. The 2030 World Cup will be hosted across Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with additional matches in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

While NBCUniversal is keen on acquiring these rights, it faces competition from other media companies, including Fox, ESPN, and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon. The bidding process for the 2030 World Cup rights is expected to begin in the next six to eight months.

For NBC, securing both language packages would enhance Peacock's value proposition during a time when streaming services are vying for relevance and subscribers. However, the potential $1 billion-plus commitment would be a significant financial decision for Comcast, NBCUniversal's parent company.

Despite the interest from traditional media conglomerates, there is no indication that crypto or blockchain companies are involved in the bidding process for the 2030 World Cup media rights.
