In Provo, Utah, Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard has been held in contempt of court for speaking to the media about the case involving the suspected killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Judge Tony Graf determined that Ballard's public statements had a "substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing the proceedings." The decision follows Ballard's interviews with several media outlets, including TMZ and USA Today, where he discussed ballistics evidence related to the case.

The case centers around Tyler Robinson, who is charged with aggravated murder in the shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Robinson's attorneys had requested the removal of the death penalty as an option, arguing that the media comments could sway potential jurors. However, Judge Graf declined to remove the death penalty from consideration.

Robinson, 23, has not yet entered a plea and is accused of shooting Kirk in the neck during a public event. DNA evidence allegedly links Robinson to the crime, although his defense argues that multiple DNA profiles were found on the evidence. The preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin on July 6.

The case has attracted significant attention, with concerns about media coverage potentially affecting the trial's fairness. Robinson's defense continues to argue that the extensive publicity may impact the jury pool, while prosecutors maintain that their comments were not intended to prejudice the case.
