On Tuesday (June 23), voters in New York, Maryland, and Utah will head to the polls for key primary races. In New York, the spotlight is on several Democratic primaries, which have become a referendum on the leadership of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani, a prominent progressive figure, backs candidates focused on issues like Israel, police reform, and inequality. In District 10, former City Comptroller Brad Lander challenges Congressman Dan Goldman, testing Mamdani's political influence. The race in District 17 is also crucial, with Democrats aiming to unseat Republican Mike Lawler.
In Utah, a new court-ordered redistricting has created a Democratic-leaning district, sparking a fierce contest between former Congressman Ben McAdams and several progressive candidates. This race could impact the composition of the House of Representatives. Meanwhile, in Maryland, voters will select candidates for governor, Congress, and local offices.
Additionally, South Carolina will hold runoff elections for governor and the U.S. House. New York uses a closed primary system, while Maryland allows same-day registration. Utah's Democratic primary is open to Republicans and independents. Results will begin to be released on Tuesday evening, with some races potentially taking longer to decide due to narrow margins.
