Rick Jackson has emerged victorious in the Republican primary runoff for Georgia governor, defeating Lt. Governor Burt Jones, who had received endorsements from President Donald Trump and current Governor Brian Kemp. The election, held on Tuesday (June 16), was closely watched as Jackson, a businessman and founder of Jackson Healthcare, managed to secure the nomination despite being considered an underdog against Jones.
Jackson's victory sets the stage for a high-profile general election in November, where he will face the Democratic nominee, Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta. Bottoms aims to become the first Black woman to serve as governor of a U.S. state.
The runoff was necessitated after neither Jackson nor Jones secured more than 50% of the votes in the May primary. According to KVUE, Jones had initially received just over 38% of the vote, while Jackson garnered more than 32%.
The race was marked by significant endorsements and a competitive campaign. Despite Trump's support for Jones, Jackson maintained a strong campaign presence and ultimately won the runoff. NBC News projected Jackson's victory, highlighting the significance of this outcome in Georgia's political landscape.
As the general election approaches, both parties are gearing up for what is expected to be a highly contested race. Georgia, considered a swing state, has not elected a Democrat as governor since 1998. Jackson's win in the runoff positions him as a key figure in the upcoming election, which will be closely watched nationwide.
