A Wisconsin dog breeding and research facility, Ridglan Farms, is set to close permanently following a deal with Big Dog Ranch Rescue. The facility, which has been the target of animal rights protests, will transfer its remaining 475 beagles to the rescue organization. These dogs will be relocated to Big Dog Ranch locations in Florida and Alabama, where they will receive medical care before being put up for adoption.
The closure comes after years of protests against Ridglan Farms, which has been accused of breeding beagles for medical research. In April, a large-scale rescue operation led to the relocation of over 2,000 beagles from the facility. According to WPTV, Big Dog Ranch Rescue founder Lauree Simmons expressed gratitude to Ridglan Farms for agreeing to the closure and emphasized the importance of supporting the dogs as they transition into new homes.
Animal rights activists have long opposed the facility's operations, citing concerns about animal welfare. Protests escalated earlier this year, resulting in arrests and the use of tear gas by police. Despite the controversy, Ridglan Farms maintains that the dogs are healthy and hopes they will thrive in their new environments.
The facility's closure is part of a broader effort to end the use of dogs in research and testing. Big Dog Ranch Rescue continues to advocate for the cessation of such practices and encourages public support for the rescued animals. Those interested in adopting a beagle or supporting the rescue efforts can find more information on Big Dog Ranch Rescue's website.
