The cost of President Donald Trump's White House ballroom project has risen to $600 million, according to documents from the project's contractor, as reported by The Washington Post. Half of this amount is expected to be funded by taxpayers, despite previous assurances from President Trump that the project would be privately funded.
Initially, the ballroom was projected to cost $400 million, with President Trump stating that he and private donors would cover the expenses. However, the new estimate indicates a significant increase, raising concerns about the use of public funds. The White House has not commented on the cost estimates but emphasized that the project is linked to security needs, citing a thwarted attack attempt on a UFC event on the South Lawn.
In May, FactCheck.org reported that congressional Republicans proposed $1 billion in federal funding for security upgrades, including those at the White House and the ballroom site. While the White House claims that the proposal is strictly for security features, critics argue that it indirectly funds the ballroom.
The ballroom, which replaces the East Wing, is part of a larger plan that includes a bunker, rooftop drone port, and underground hospital. The project has faced legal challenges, including a lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which argues that no president can legally alter the White House without review. Despite a temporary block on construction, work has resumed pending a hearing in June.
As the project progresses, questions remain about the funding sources. President Trump has promised that the ballroom will be built at "zero cost" to taxpayers, funded by himself and private donations. However, with the rising costs and public funding proposals, the ballroom's financial plan continues to face scrutiny.
