The organizing committee for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, known as LA28, will begin accepting volunteer applications on Monday, July 14, exactly two years before the Olympic opening ceremony. The committee is looking for around 60,000 volunteers to assist during both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of 10 non-consecutive shifts, each lasting approximately eight hours, within either the Olympic period from March to August 2028 or the Paralympic period from August to September 2028. The roles available include welcoming and guiding guests and athletes, providing medical care, and offering language translation assistance.
Applications are open to individuals worldwide, and proficiency in English is required. Volunteers do not need to be U.S. citizens or California residents. According to LA28's official FAQ, volunteers can indicate their preferred role categories and locations, though specific assignments are not guaranteed.
The majority of volunteer opportunities will be in the Los Angeles area, but events will also take place in cities such as San Diego, Oklahoma City, New York, St. Louis, Columbus, Nashville, and San Jose. LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover emphasized the importance of volunteers, stating, "They are a friendly face who helps welcome the world, create memorable experiences, and bring the Olympic and Paralympic spirit to life."
Besides volunteering during the games, applicants can engage in community service events leading up to the games, such as cleanups and food packing activities. For more information, potential volunteers can visit the LA28 volunteer page.
