A tragic incident occurred on Friday (June 12) at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, when a large outdoor tent collapsed due to severe weather, resulting in one fatality and injuries to about two dozen others. The event was part of the church's 20th-anniversary celebration.

According to a press release from Bedford County, the tent collapsed around 6:45 p.m. local time as a severe storm cell moved through the area, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. The weather conditions caused the tent structure to fail, despite having passed an inspection by county authorities earlier in the week.

Bedford County Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Abbey Johnston reported that 11 people were taken to local hospitals, while another 11 were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The tent, which had a capacity of 1,500, was being evacuated by the church's pastor, Troy Keaton, when the incident occurred. "Just as I had walked to the stage to release people to their cars, a burst of wind picked up the tent," Keaton said in a statement on social media.

The church had advertised the event as part of a "multiply week" celebration, featuring food, a service, and activities for families. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger expressed her condolences and gratitude for the quick response of first responders, stating that her team is in close contact with the response team to provide assistance.

The incident is under investigation, with emergency personnel from neighboring localities, including Moneta Volunteer Fire Department and Roanoke County, responding to the scene. The community of Moneta, home to around 450 people, is located approximately 18 miles east of Roanoke.
