President Donald Trump has appointed Bill Pulte as the acting director of national intelligence, with the expectation that he will reduce the staff of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Trump announced on Tuesday (June 2) that Pulte, who currently leads the Federal Housing Finance Agency, will temporarily replace Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned due to her husband's health issues.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Trump has directed Pulte to start the process of downsizing the office, citing that its size has been "way too high for way too long." Pulte, who lacks national security experience, is expected to oversee 18 intelligence agencies, including the CIA and NSA, during his temporary tenure.

The appointment has drawn criticism, with concerns about Pulte's lack of experience and potential bias. Senator Mark Warner expressed worry about Pulte's qualifications, while Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the decision as rewarding loyalty over competence.

The ODNI has already seen budget cuts and workforce reductions under Gabbard's leadership. Trump has indicated that Pulte's role is temporary, with five candidates being considered for the permanent position.
