The House of Representatives approved a significant military aid package for Ukraine on Thursday (June 4), marking a defiance of President Donald Trump's foreign policy. The bill, which passed with a 226-195 vote, saw 18 Republicans join Democrats in support. This measure provides $1.3 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, which has been battling a Russian invasion for over four years, and expands sanctions against Moscow.
The bill's passage was achieved through a discharge petition, a method that allows the House to force a vote on bills blocked by majority leadership. This maneuver was initiated by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The bill's approval represents a strong bipartisan statement of support for Kyiv, despite resistance from Republican leadership.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) urged his fellow Republicans to "stand on the right side of history" before the vote, emphasizing the significance of the decision. According to Politico, Bacon stated, "This is our Churchill moment or our Chamberlain moment, and by God I’m going to choose Churchill."
The bill's future remains uncertain as it faces challenges in the Republican-controlled Senate, where a similar package has stalled despite widespread support. President Trump is expected to veto the legislation if it reaches his desk. Meanwhile, supporters of the bill argue that it sends a strong signal of U.S. support for Ukraine during a time of increased Russian aggression.
