A tense hostage situation continues to unfold at a Chase Bank in downtown Bakersfield, California, as of Wednesday (June 3). The standoff began on Tuesday afternoon when a man allegedly entered the bank with a bomb strapped to his body, holding several people hostage.

The Bakersfield Police Department, with the assistance of the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, is working to resolve the situation. As of Tuesday evening, two hostages had been safely released, and the remaining individuals inside the bank were reported to be in good health.

Police first responded to the bomb threat at the Chase Bank located near Chester Avenue and 17th Street around 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The building, which also houses a school district office, was quickly surrounded by law enforcement, including SWAT teams, bomb squad personnel, K-9 units, and drone operators.

Bakersfield Police Sgt. Eric Celedon assured the community that all available resources are being utilized to bring the situation to a safe resolution. In a statement on social media, the department confirmed the bomb threat and urged residents to avoid the downtown area due to road closures.

According to a report by Fox News, crisis negotiators have maintained communication with the suspect, which is considered a positive development. Retired FBI supervisory special agent Jason Pack noted that such communication provides negotiators with options to secure the release of additional hostages.

The situation has led to the lockdown of several nearby city buildings, including City Hall North, City Hall South, and the Bakersfield Police Headquarters, as a precaution. Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh expressed gratitude for the coordinated efforts of law enforcement and urged the public to stay clear of the area.

As the standoff continues, authorities remain focused on ensuring the safety of all individuals involved. The situation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
