Florida Congressman Gus Bilirakis is advocating for the protection of AM radio in vehicles. Recently, the House Energy and Commerce Committee advanced a measure that would require automakers to include AM radio as a standard feature in new vehicles and prohibit subscription fees for access. The proposal, part of a broader transportation bill, aims to ensure AM radio remains accessible, especially during emergencies and natural disasters.

Bilirakis, who chairs the House Commerce Committee, emphasized the importance of AM radio as a communication tool during emergencies. He highlighted that AM radio provides diverse viewpoints and has a wide reach, making it essential for rural and underserved communities. "Radio broadcast still has one of the highest reaches of any medium," Bilirakis stated, noting its importance for public safety.

The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (H.R. 8449) aligns with a similar Senate bill and has bipartisan support. It requires the Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission, to issue a rule mandating AM radio capabilities in cars. Automakers would have two to four years to comply, depending on their production volume.

The bill has garnered support from over 250 House members and more than 125 organizations. It aims to maintain AM radio as a vital source of news, sports, and emergency information. The National Association of Broadcasters and other advocates have urged Congress to pass the legislation swiftly. The Senate Commerce Committee has already approved the bill, moving it closer to becoming law.
