The upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is anticipated to have a significant economic impact on the U.S. With less than a month to go before the tournament kicks off, officials from the Trump administration have projected a $30 billion windfall for the country. The tournament will feature 104 matches across 16 host cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle.
The World Cup is expected to bring an influx of soccer fans and tourists, not only to the 11 cities hosting matches but also to the 48 communities serving as base camps for teams. The White House Task Force for the World Cup highlighted the potential for these areas to see increased tourism and economic activity.
However, a report by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) indicates that hotel bookings in the U.S. may not meet initial expectations. The report cites travel concerns from international fans, visa issues, and high costs as factors impacting demand. In cities like Kansas City, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle, hotel operators have reported bookings below typical seasonal demand.
Despite these challenges, some cities are experiencing positive outcomes. Miami and Atlanta are seeing strong bookings, driven by leisure appeal and confirmed team base camps. The Score reported that short-term rental bookings are increasing in metropolitan areas like Kansas City, Seattle, and Miami, suggesting alternative accommodations are gaining popularity.
As the tournament approaches, there is hope for a surge in international visitors. The U.S. and FIFA are working to ensure a welcoming experience for travelers, with efforts to address visa and transportation costs. While the economic benefits may vary across host cities, the World Cup is poised to leave a lasting legacy on the U.S. economy.
