The 152nd Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday (May 2) at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, with post time scheduled for 6:57 p.m. ET. This year's race features a 20-horse field and begins the Triple Crown season, drawing major attention from fans and bettors across the country.
You can listen to the race live on iHeartRadio station WHAS. Coverage starts at 8 a.m. ET and runs all day, with experts previewing and handicapping all the day's races, leading up to the Kentucky Derby at 6:57 p.m. ET.
Renegade enters the Derby as the morning-line favorite at 4-1 odds, despite concerns over his No. 1 post position and recent foot issues. No horse has won from Post 1 since 1986, and some handicappers also point to Renegade's special horseshoes and morning workouts as concerns.
Experts caution that picking a winner could be tough this year, as the field is considered especially open. Other top contenders include Commandment, The Puma, So Happy, and Further Ado, all with similar odds and strong records in recent prep races. The favorites have shifted throughout the week, with The Puma joining Renegade at the top of the odds at 5-1 after a strong showing in the Florida Derby.
Commandment, listed at 7-1, comes into the Derby with four straight wins, including a narrow victory in the Florida Derby. The Puma, another major contender at 7-1, has drawn attention for his improvement over the season but lacks experience against elite competition. So Happy and Further Ado round out the main favorites, both with solid prep wins and experienced connections.
There have been two recent scratches, Silent Tactic and Fulleffort. They were replaced by longshots Great White and Ocelli.
