Numerous people where shot when gunfire broke out at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on Thursday (April 23) Authorities responded to reports of an active shooter in the mall’s food court just after 1:20 p.m. local time, Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse said.
Chief Morse said the shooting stemmed from an argument between two groups, which escalated into gunfire inside the crowded food court. The police do not believe this was a random attack, but instead a targeted confrontation between the groups involved.
While initial reports said that ten people were injured, officials later clarified that at least six people were shot. One person was killed, while the other five victims were taken to the hospital.
While the suspects fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, authorities said they located and arrested five suspects.
“This is still an ongoing investigation, and we’re still looking for more people that may be involved,” Morse told reporters.
As of Thursday afternoon, both Governor Jeff Landry and Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards urged the public to avoid the area and assured residents that authorities are working to apprehend those responsible. Governor Landry described the event as an “active shooter scene” and expressed gratitude for first responders' swift action. Mayor Edwards addressed the suspects directly, saying, “To the thugs who did this, we are going to catch you."
A major police presence remained at the scene throughout the afternoon as investigators gathered evidence and worked to interview witnesses. Mall spokesperson Lindsay Kahn confirmed the incident and referred all other questions to law enforcement. The FBI and multiple local agencies also responded to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The Mall of Louisiana was closed to the public as police continued their search for those involved. Authorities ask anyone with information to contact the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Officials noted that this was the second mass shooting in Louisiana this week. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
