Kirk Moore, principal of Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma, is being praised as a hero after he tackled and subdued an armed intruder on Tuesday (April 7), preventing what could have become a deadly school shooting. Moore was shot in the leg during the confrontation but is now recovering, and no students or staff were injured.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), the gunman was identified as Victor Hawkins, a 20-year-old former student. Hawkins entered the school armed and fired multiple rounds before Moore and other staff members acted quickly to stop him. The school was immediately put on lockdown as police arrived and secured the scene. The suspect was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including Shooting with Intent to Kill and Unlawful Carry.

Community leaders, parents, and officials have thanked Moore for his bravery. Pauls Valley Mayor Jocelyn Rushing, who also works at the school, said, "He’s a fine man who loves the students and is willing to go out of his way to ensure their safety, and that was proven today by the steps that he took." Superintendent Dr. Brett Knight echoed the sentiment, describing Moore as a mentor and steady leader in a message to families.

The OSBI continues to lead the investigation. According to community members, Moore is known for his selflessness and care for students, with many former students describing him as someone who would "do anything to save those kids."

As Moore recovers, the district and local leaders have thanked emergency responders and all staff involved. The school will provide updates on when classes will resume, and counseling support remains available for anyone affected.
