A 10-year-old boy stabbed a 7-year-old girl three times in the shoulder on the playground of an elementary school in an extremely wealthy Mountain View, California, neighborhood, the California Post reports.

Investigators said it's unclear whether the two children knew each other prior to the incident taking place on the Bubb Elementary School playground on March 11. The boy led the police on a hot pursuit before authorities caught him with the assistance of home surveillance footage and a K-9 unit at his house without incident.

The boy allegedly used a kitchen knife during the stabbing, which resulted in the school immediately being placed on lockdown. The girl received treatment from the Mountain View Fire Department at the scene before she was released to a parent and is reported to be recovering, according to the Mountain View Whisman School District.

“We’re very grateful the student is expected to be okay. The safety of our students is always our top priority,” the district said in a statement obtained by the California Post.

Neighbors told KTVU that they were stunned following news of the attack.

“A 10-year-old with a knife attacking someone? I can’t even fathom how that could happen,” said Lori Parsons.

"The 10-year-old who did the stabbing — what’s in his mind? And what can we do to prevent this from happening to another innocent victim?" another resident said.
