Boar's Head has issued a recall for certain cheese products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall follows a previous incident where contaminated deli meats led to 10 deaths and 60 hospitalizations. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall as Class I, indicating a high risk of serious health consequences or death if the products are consumed.

The recall involves Boar's Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, sold in 6-ounce packages with UPC 0-42421-05858, and Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Cheese in food service-sized bags with UPC 042421-15119. These products have "best by" dates ranging from November 21, 2025, to March 12, 2026. Additionally, Boar's Head has voluntarily withdrawn its Pecorino Romano Cheese wedges, which are not directly affected by the recall, as a precautionary measure. These wedges have a UPC of 042421-15160 and "best by" dates from November 25, 2025, to May 11, 2026.

According to the FDA, the recalled items were distributed nationwide, including at Tops and Big Y stores. Consumers are advised to discard the cheese or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled cheese, but anyone who experiences symptoms of listeriosis, such as fever, muscle aches, or gastrointestinal issues, should seek medical attention.

Listeria can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. The bacterium can survive refrigeration and freezing, making it essential to avoid consuming any potentially contaminated products.
