A passenger on Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Seas allegedly jumped overboard to evade a gambling debt of nearly $17,000. Jey Gonzalez-Diaz, traveling under the name "Jeremy Diaz," was detained by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers near the Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday (September 7). According to a criminal complaint, Gonzalez-Diaz attempted to flee during disembarkation by jumping off the ship.
Security footage captured Gonzalez-Diaz being brought to shore by two passing jet skis. CBP officers found $14,600 in cash, a backpack, a handbag, two mobile devices, and five identification documents in his possession. When questioned, Gonzalez-Diaz reportedly told officers he jumped because he feared being taxed on the cash he was carrying.
The cruise line reported that Gonzalez-Diaz's debt was primarily related to casino and gaming expenses. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The case remains under investigation, and Royal Caribbean is cooperating with authorities.
