Conservative activist Charlie Kirk was reportedly shot while hosting a debate at Utah Valley University on Wednesday (September 10). According to The Guardian, Kirk was sitting underneath a tent while speaking to students around 12:10 p.m. when he was shot.
Kirk was rushed to the hospital, in critical condition. According to Jennifer Jacobs, an official from Turning Point USA confirmed that Kirk, the organization's co-founder and executive director, was shot in the neck.
"A Turning Point USA official says Charlie Kirk is at the hospital but 'it doesn’t look good.' Confirmed Kirk was shot in the neck," she wrote on X.
Shortly after her post, President Donald Trump announced that Kirk died from his injuries.
While initial reports suggested that police had a suspect in custody, officials said that the man seen being detained in video shared on X was not the gunman.
Newsweek reported that the suspect fired a single shot from the roof of a building about 200 yards away from the event, which was hosted by Turning Point USA.
FBI Director Kash Patel responded to the shooting in a post on X, promising the full support of the FBI.
"We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected. Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation," Patel wrote.
